Summer Music offers a vibrant experience of high quality chamber music in a magnificent setting. Inspired by over half a century of rich musical tradition at Haddo House, this first ‘pilot’ festival comprises 11 events focusing on Britten and Russian composers, alongside classical works. Music on offer includes the first complete performance in the north-east of Shostakovich’s extraordinary piano cycle of 24 Preludes & Fugues, impressionistic violin/piano music by Prokofiev, a rarely-heard clarinet trio by Khachaturian and a wide range of works by Britten and Stravinsky including ‘The Soldier’s Tale’ suite. Performances take place in the Library, Drawing Room, Chapel and Haddo’s unique wooden hall, where many distinguished musicians have appeared over the years, including Benjamin Britten and Sviatoslav Richter.
Artists include the Coull Quartet, Endymion (Mark van de Wiel - clarinet, Krysia Osostowicz - violin, Michael Dussek - piano), violinist Susanne Stanzeleit and mezzo-soprano Jane Irwin, whose international career has blossomed since her early performances at Haddo. There are also popular Scottish-based artists – organist George McPhee, 'cellist Robert Irvine, and pianists Graeme McNaught and Gusztáv Fenyö, the festival’s artistic director - as well as Scottish Connection, an ensemble of some of the best young Scottish string players.
In addition, the world’s foremost music-film director, Bruno Monsaingeon, will personally attend the screening of his award-winning portrait of the legendary Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter.
